Graduated Drivers License..cause Teens Are Crazy!!!!!!

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens accounting for 36 of all deaths in this age group CDC 2006. However research suggests that the most strict and comprehensive graduated drivers licensing programs are associated with reductions of 38 and 40 in fatal and injury crashes respectively of 16yearold drivers cdc.gov/ncipc/factsheets/teenmvh.htm.

Graduated Driver Licensing is a threepronged approach to readying teens for the dangerous world of driving. As stated above teens are more prone to death and injury due to driving than any other age group. But by going though the Graduated Driver Process; they can learn the skills necessary to be a safe motorist.

The First part of GDL is the Supervised Learning Period. After receiving a learners permit the new driver is allowed to drive only with an adult in order to satisfy a minimum number of supervised driving hours.

The Second part of GDL is The Intermediate License. The new driver has begun this step once they pass the driving test and receive their Drivers License from the DMV. Although the new driver does not need any supervision; there are a number of restrictions in order to keep the newbie safe in highrisk situations. These restrictions include: no cell phone no passengers and a set curfew for the new driver.

The third and final step of GDL is the FullPrivilege License. This occurs when the new driver meets the state age requirement as well as any other requirements set forth. Once this level is reached; the new driver has full driving privileges.

So how has the Graduated Drivers Licensing program helped? Well the number of fatal crashes for 16year old drivers has fallen by 11 according to nhtsa.dot.gov.
